A Comprehensive Guide to Rank-based Organization & Success in The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War

By Empress Jhazala | May 16, 2024 | 8:00 PM

Establishing a clear system of ranks and responsibilities is crucial for running a successful Fellowship, yet it's often overlooked. The system I developed in Season 2 has proven highly effective.

You are welcome to copy and implement this hierarchy in your own Fellowship’s Discord server. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out—

In any Fellowship, members often log in at different times. Assigning ranks helps create a structured environment that promotes individual responsibility and establishes a clear chain of command. This system enhances communication, streamlines organization, and clarifies ongoing tasks.

To begin, select two or more roles that you think suit you best from the options below and post them. However, if you’re interested in a 'Watchman' or 'Counterespionage' position, please don’t announce that publicly. Select and post any other 2 positions, then send me (and only me) a private message with your request.

Those who are appointed to a new position they haven't held before will undergo a trial period before assuming the role permanently.

⚜️ General                    🔮 Advisor

🎖️ Lieutenant               💎 Diplomat

📯 Commander            🎩 Ambassador

⚔️ Soldier                      👁️ Watchman

🦎 Counterespionage          🧩Translator

Role Responsibilities

- ADVISOR: As an Advisor, your primary responsibility is to consult with leaders on state affairs, including diplomatic relations. You will also assign tasks to Diplomats and Ambassadors. In battle situations, you will follow orders from the chain of command.

- DIPLOMAT: As a Diplomat, you will take directives from Advisors and be tasked with managing peace treaties and negotiations with other factions. This role requires exceptional communication skills and relevant experience. In combat situations, you will adhere to orders from the chain of command.

- AMBASSADOR: As an Ambassador, your main responsibility is to establish and maintain strong relationships with all other factions. This role calls for a sociable and friendly demeanor, with no room for anger or sarcasm. You'll primarily operate in World Chat, and during battles, you'll adhere to the chain of command.

- TRANSLATOR: Although the game includes an in-game translator, it's always beneficial to have someone fluent in the native languages of different factions. Accurate translation is crucial for effective communication between players globally, as misinterpretations or incorrect tones can arise. Skilled translators are essential for the development of any nation or faction.

- WATCHMAN: A watchman is typically responsible for monitoring and guarding a specific area to ensure its safety and security. This can involve patrolling the premises, checking for signs of intrusion or unauthorized activity, and responding to alarms or disturbances. Watchmen may also enforce rules and regulations within the Fellowship, and report any suspicious or unusual incidents to authorities or their supervisors. Overall, their primary goal is to maintain a safe and secure environment for the people under their watch.

- ESPIONAGE: Spies, also known as intelligence officers or operatives, work covertly to gather information. Their activities can include espionage, which involves gathering classified or sensitive information about an enemy or rival Faction’s activities, capabilities, and intentions. Spies may also engage in sabotage, counterintelligence, and other clandestine activities to protect their own Faction’s interests and security. It requires meticulous planning, discretion, and sometimes great personal risk.

Chain of Command

- 2 LEADERS: are responsible for guiding the Fellowship, establishing policies, overseeing operations, handling diplomatic affairs, and providing leadership during conflicts. They serve as the public representation of the Fellowship, ensuring its prosperity and continuity.

- 1-2 INTERIM LEADERS: To maintain the Fellowship's operations effectively, it's crucial to appoint 1-2 dependable interim Leaders who can fill in when the designated leaders are unavailable. Typically, a General will be chosen for this role based on their experience and thorough grasp of the faction's activities.

- 3 GENERALS: will collaborate closely with Leaders, playing a crucial role in guiding the faction's direction through strategic planning, coordination, and leadership. They oversee Lieutenants across various time zones to maintain unity, efficiency, and success in battles and other endeavors. Beyond developing and implementing long-term strategies, Generals assess the faction's strengths, make important decisions to achieve goals, and mentor lower-ranking members to promote a culture of teamwork and excellence.

- 4 LIEUTENANTS: will each supervise and guide two Commanders. Their responsibilities include resolving conflicts, communicating orders from higher authorities, and offering support to the Commanders.

- 8 COMMANDERS: will be responsible for leading groups of 10-11 soldiers each, promoting teamwork and coordination within their units. Commanders and their units will be organized according to time zones and provided with their own custom chat.

- SOLDIERS: Soldiers have a wide range of responsibilities. They can engage in combat operations, maintain peace and security, provide humanitarian aid, conduct training exercises, and support various missions such as reconnaissance, logistics, and medical assistance. Overall, soldiers are trained to protect their Fellowship’s interests and uphold its values, often sacrificing their own safety in the process.

To strengthen your Fellowship even further, here are some extra strategies and practices to consider:

1. Training and Development: Promote ongoing learning and growth within your group. Offer resources, guides, and training sessions to improve skills and knowledge in each member's role, contributing to overall group effectiveness.

2. Clear Communication Channels: Establish specific communication channels for different Ranks & Units. Use voice chat platforms, forums, or in-game chat channels to ensure quick and effective communication. Clearly define each channel's purpose to avoid confusion and streamline discussions.

3. Regular Meetings and Updates: Hold regular meetings to update members on faction progress, upcoming events, and strategy changes. Provide a forum for questions, idea sharing, and addressing concerns. But remember to compartmentalize. See my guide on ‘How to Spot a Spy’ amongst your Fellowship.

4. Collaborative Decision-Making (OPTIONAL): Foster a collaborative environment where members can contribute ideas and suggestions. Encourage open discussions and value diverse perspectives. Involving the entire group in decision-making promotes innovation and teamwork. While final decisions ultimately come from leadership, exercise caution, as things could potentially become chaotic, and the last thing you want is internal conflict or division. If you choose to adopt this strategy, ensure your Fellowship understands that decisions are final once made. Emphasize the importance of respecting the chain of command and ensure that battlefield orders are followed.

5. Recognition and Rewards: Recognize members' achievements and contributions. Celebrate milestones, victories, and hard work. Acknowledging dedication boosts morale, strengthens camaraderie, and encourages ongoing commitment.

6. External Engagement: Engage with other Fellowships, alliances, and individuals outside of your server. Join events, competitions, and projects together. Building alliances and positive relationships can lead to shared benefits and increased influence.

7. Adaptability and Flexibility: Stay adaptable to changes in the game. Continuously assess strategies and be open to adjustments. Flexibility allows your group to thrive in different situations and stay competitive.

Remember, the key to a successful Fellowship lies in unity, coordination, and dedication of its members. By implementing this system, you will create a strong and formidable force that can conquer challenges and achieve greatness in Middle-earth. Good luck on your journey!

Through the implementation of this system, you will forge a powerful force capable of dominating your foes and achieving glory in Middle-earth.

Now, PREPARE FOR BATTLE!
